The Brain Tool Kit Story
While working in clinical practice, Melissa saw firsthand the gap in accessible, user-friendly concussion recovery tools.
Clinicians needed a practical tool to use in clinic that was also affordable for patients to support their rehab outside the clinic. Existing apps were either too costly or available only on one platform (iOS)—never for both Android and IOs. Frustrated by this limitation (being an Android user!), she set out to create the Brain Tool Kit, an app designed to fill this gap. Developed with both patients and clinicians in mind, the Brain Tool Kit provides evidence-based tools to optimize brain health and rehabilitation as well as plenty of room for clinicians to be creative and personalize the activities based on the needs of the individual patient—accessible anytime, anywhere.

About Melissa
Melissa Biscardi is a concussion clinician, research trainee, and educator with a passion for optimizing brain health. She is the brainiac behind the Brain Tool Kit application and has dedicated her career to advancing concussion rehabilitation, research, and education.
Melissa obtained her nursing degree in 2007, a diploma of osteopathic manual therapy in 2013, followed by a Master of Science in 2019. She is currently completing her PhD at the University of Toronto’s Acquired Brain Injury Lab, Faculty of Medicine. Her research focuses on interventions for adults post-concussion and explores sex differences in injury and recovery. Her goal is to enhance concussion assessment, education, and management.
She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, contributed to three book chapters, and presented her work at leading conferences across Canada and the USA. Her contributions to brain health research have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Women and Brain Health Award, a Mitacs Fellowship in collaboration with NeuroFlex and a Toronto Rehabilitation Scholarship.
Melissa is the director of Concussion Rehab, her private practice where she helps high-achieving individuals recover from concussions, persistent concussion symptoms, and legacy brain injuries through a holistic, evidence-based approach and collaboration with other members of the concussion recovery team. She also trains clinicians in cutting-edge concussion management strategies through her educational courses.
Obsessed with all things concussion rehab, research, and education, Melissa is on a mission to revolutionize how concussions are understood and treated—helping both patients and healthcare providers bridge the gap between research and real-world recovery.
While I am the creator of the Brain Tool Kit, the app would not be possible without the incredible work and support of the software programmers, KC (iOS) and MS (Android). It DOES take a team.
